The Foundation, capitalising on its previous experiences with Hope 1 & 2 and in partnership with Gurgoan administration including the Office of Deputy Commissioner, HUDA Administrator, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon; Office of Police Commissioner; Office of Deputy Commissioner of Police – Traffic; Ansals API; and Residents Welfare Associations, made an intervention for improvement of Sushant Lok Block A, Gurgaon to be converted into a model block two years ago. As a result the works that were carried out and dedicated to the community during the year included:
- Check-dams to prevent flooding of low-lying areas;
- Storm water drain connected to master drain at IFFCO Chowk;
- Organising capacity building workshops on Smart City, Safe City; and,
- Operationalising drain links on MG road with trunk line.
The impact of such measures was visible during the monsoon of 2012, even during thundershowers the Sushant Lok Block A did not report any incidence of water logging, flooding or back flow of sewage from the main trunk line. Even the flowing water on main M G Road was blocked from entering into the Sushant Lok Block A and found its way into the storm water drain. So not only such measures prevented a disaster but also helped the authorities find a solution that could be replicated at other places. Since the rainwater found its way into the storm water drain, the nearby colonies, which used to suffer during monsoons leading to water logging, did not report any such incident this time.
The project has been sustainable and has prevented the affected colonies from getting flooded. Ever since the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon has taken over several of such builder colonies, the learnings from the past have been implemented in addition to newer measures.
